One of the prominent state parties of the most populous state is going through a tough phase this year. It all started with Akhilesh Yadav firing his uncle, Shivpal Singh Yadav, brother and confidante of Mulayam Singh Yadav on one hand, and Ram Gopal Yadav, Mulayam’s cousin supporting Akhilesh on the other hand. This family feud has been since then leading to a vicious cycle of problems.
The fight intensified when the party’s leader Mulayam released the list of candidates for 2017 state election. In this list, Akhilesh’s favourites were missing. Akhilesh went on to release a parallel list of candidates after he failed convincing his father. Angered by the activities, Mulayam expelled his son Akhilesh and Ram Gopal Yadav from the party for six years on the grounds of indiscipline. But, they were soon re-inducted following the fight between the party cadres.
This feud did not stop here. On the new year’s eve, Ram Gopal declared Akhilesh as the National President of Samajwadi Party, in a National Convention. Due to this move, the party apparently called for a split under two leaderships.
With the party heading towards split, Akhilesh’s and Mulayam’s factions approached the Election Commission, seeking their rights on the party and its symbol, the cycle. To this, the Election Commission clearly stated that it will hear both the factions and see the majority in each of the factions on Friday.
As the hearing started, there was a great expectation, both among the politicians and the people of Uttar Pradesh. But the EC reserved its order on the dispute for cycle within the party after a four-hour long hearing.
During the first part of this four-hour long hearing, the Akhilesh faction argued on the majority supporting him. While Mulayam has clearly told the Election Commission that there is no split in the party. He also said that its only an administrative dispute which he will sort out soon.
In case of split, one of the factions will have the ‘Cycle symbol’, while the other faction will have to submit the symbol before the poll. The people also speculate that the Akhilesh faction will inch closer to alliance with the Congress, if the split is finalised.
