Jet Airways plane from Goa to Mumbai slid off the taxiway at Dabolim airport in Goa on Tuesday. The incident took place around 5 am in the morning when a Boeing 737 airplane was getting ready for take-off to Mumbai.
The aircraft came to a full circle and ceased from motion leaning forward, its tip touching the ground, as the nose wheel disintegrated. The aircraft was carrying 161 people, out of which only 15 sustained slight injuries during the process of evacuation. The runway was also affected to a certain extent causing the Navy and Airports Authority of India (AAI) to close down the airport for almost five hours.
The aircraft, which had arrived from Dubai, was taking off for Mumbai when the mishap took place. There were 154 travelers and seven crew members present on the plane, who were later evacuated safely with the help of emergency parachutes. According to the officials of Jet Airways, the airplane skidded off the runway due to some technical glitch.
Since the airplane was placed on its nose and leaned forward, passengers started panicking. The hurry to leave the aircraft and stern passengers wanting to take their hand baggage while exiting led to some of the slight injuries.
”Passengers violated safety procedures,” an official said. “I fractured my leg,” passenger Dinesh Kumar said. “The moment the plane started running on the runway, it slipped into the nearby field and there was smoke inside the flight.”
The runway was permitted to continue flight operations after a detailed examination. According to the representatives of Jet Airways, there was no fog and visibility was clear at the time of the incident. A Naval spokespersons said, “Navy responded within 15-20 minutes and all the passengers were evacuated safely out of the aircraft. It would have turned into a catastrophe had the Navy not acted promptly.”
