This can be called a paradox for a movie like Blade Runner 2049, that, it’s a masterpiece yet a flop! That’s how it’s box-office fate turned out to be, which was the most unfortunate thing to have happened for a ‘movie’ like this-sheer brilliance of cinematic excellence and mesmerizing performances-with a breathtaking cinematography by one and only, Roger Dickens.
Still, all that said, it all meant nothing for most of the audience who thought that the movie was not good, because it was ‘long’ or it wasn’t fully an action/sci-fi extravaganza!
Well, whatever the reasons have been, the movie is a pure genius by the Arrival star director, Denis Villeneuve.
And just recently, the Blade Runner 2049 director, during a media interaction opened up about what was the actual reason for the movie’s debacle, on the cash registers.
When asked regarding the film’s B.O. failure, Villeneuve said, “Honestly I don’t know. I’m still digesting it. I had the best critics of my life. I never had a movie welcomed like that. At the same time, the box office in the United States was a disappointment. That’s the truth, because these movies are expensive, and it will still make tons of money but not enough. And the thing is I think that maybe people were not familiar enough with the universe, and the fact the movie’s long, I don’t know. It’s still a mystery to me. I make movies, I don’t sell them.”
But most importantly, when asked about whether or not there will be a director’s cut for the real, die-hard fans, the director’s answer was a bit disheartening for them but that’s how he is; saying, “what is out of the movie is dead.” And as per Denis Villeneuve’s film-making the released theatrical of 2049 is ‘the director’s cut’.
So, when the movie eventually comes out on BluRay/DVDs for home viewing, next year, the length will remain the same.
