Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios have been quite clear so far in their intention and the approach to handling the Star Wars franchise. 2015 saw the commencement of a new trilogy in the saga in the form of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which eventually went on to collect over $2 billion at the global box office. And, it looks like director Rian Johnson will want to carry the momentum forward kick-started by the previous film’s director, J. J. Abrams, with the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

All the trailers and TV spots have been quite indicative of the makers’ going old school by using practical effects and real sets to make the galaxy far, far away look as authentic and real as possible. Not only does it assure an experience that viewers can connect with more, but also provides actors a better opportunity to prove their mettle in a film that is science-fiction at its heart.

Rian Johnson, best known for his Looper released in 2012 has now revealed how exciting and at ease it was for him to work around with practical effects in comparison to the VFX for the post-production. The filmmaker in an interview has now dished out interesting details on his working experience in The Last Jedi stating:

“Honestly, the most technically challenging stuff are the space battles because those are the ones where, aside from the cockpits, nothing is real. The practical effects, and especially the creature workshop, was much more fun”.

He further added, “They would put on music and they would have all of the creatures interacting with actors in like a little scene… And I would walk through this scene, and that’s how I reviewed the creatures. That’s how I saw them for the first time. It was incredible”.

Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios will have been most pleased with his work on The Last Jedi for them to announce a new trilogy next featuring all new characters.

Scheduled to hit screens worldwide on December 15, 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi written and directed by Rian Johnson stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro.
