Rey in action in a still from The Last Jedi

The Force is as strong as ever, and even more triumphant this time, for the 8th Episode in the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi. The Rian Johnson directorial has now officially become the second-best movie of all-time in terms of huge ‘domestic’ opening weekend collections. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened with a humongous earnings of $220 million, in its first week (Friday-Sunday).

That’s just slightly lower than its predecessor The Force Awakens’s $248 million (or $247.9mn, being more accurate). But, it’s really-really more than expected since many early predictions were figuring something below $220 million!

Along with these spectacular box-office figures, ‘The Last Jedi’ also became the joint-fastest with The Force Awakens to reach $100 million, on its release ($104.8mn), on Friday and also turned out to become the second largest opening day ever (again, behind The Force Awakens)!

Talking about the international markets, The Last Jedi also had great run on the worldwide box-office during its opening week and made a strong $230 million from the overseas theatres.

Now, adding that amount to the domestic collections, it sums up to a phenomenal $450 million, in the first weekend, worldwide!

Its also now the third-largest global opening weekend debut ever, being only behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and (obviously) The Force Awakens. (This is when it’s not released in China yet. When taking that in consideration then, it comes on the 5th number, behind The Fate of the Furious and Jurassic World, since those were released in China too, globally).
