After a series of many leaks and revelations, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi on Monday announced the launch of its much-awaited bezel-less display smartphone, called the “Xiaomi Mi Mix 2” at an event in China. The new Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is the successor to company’s previous Mi Mix, which was launched in China last year. Both smartphones sport unique bezel-less design, metal chassis and ceramic rear body, which were designed by French designer Philippe Starck. However, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 comes in three variants based on its RAM configuration and native storage capacity: Mi Mix 2 with 6GB RAM & 64GB internal storage, Mi Mix 2 with 6GB RAM & 128GB internal storage, and Mi Mix 2 with 6GB RAM & 256GB internal storage.
Besides this, the company also announced a Special Edition of the Mi Mix 2, which comes in 8GB RAM with 128GB storage capacity. The standard variants come equipped with four-sided curved ceramic body with 7-Series aluminium alloy frame and will be available in Black colour only. On the other hand, the Mi Mix 2 Special Edition sports a full ceramic body and will be available in Black and White body colour options. As for pricing, the Mi Mix 2 with 6GB RAM & 64GB internal storage variant has been launched in China with a price tag of CNY 3,299 (approximately Rs. 32,350), the Mi Mix 2 with 6GB RAM & 128GB internal storage version is priced at CNY 3,599 (approximately Rs. 35,280), the Mi Mix 2 with 6GB RAM & 256GB native storage variant has been priced at CNY 3,999 (approximately Rs. 39,210), while for the Mi Mix 2 Special Edition with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, you have to pay CNY 4,699 (approximately Rs. 46,000). Registrations for the Mi Mix 2 has already begun on company’s website, while the same will be going on flash sale in China on Friday, September 15. On the other side, the Mi Mix 2 Special Edition model will go on sale in November.
Interestingly, Xiaomi India’s Managing Director, Manu Kumar Jain on Monday confirmed in a Twitter post that the freshly launched Mi Mix 2 will be launched in India pretty soon. Though the Twitter post doesn’t reveal any specific timelines, pricing details and availability for the same. As far as specifications are concerned, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 flaunts a large 5.99-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display with screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The display has 18:9 aspect ratio, DCI-P3 colour gamut, 1500:1 contrast ratio, and offers a pixel density of 403ppi. Under the hood, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is powered by a 2.45GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor clubbed with Adreno 540 image processing unit to handle the graphics. In terms of memory, the Mi Mix 2 is backed up by 6GB / 8GB (Special edition) of LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB / 128GB / 256GB of internal storage. On the software fronts, the device runs company’s proprietary MIUI 9 custom UI skin, based on Google’s Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system. The Mi Mix 2 also features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner for biometric security. It also has hidden sound-guided speaker that comes with 50mW membrane speaker with sound guiding tube and a sound hole for an enhanced audio experience.
In terms of optics, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 features a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with Sony IMX386 sensor, an f/2.0 aperture, 1.25μm pixel size, 4-axis OIS (optical image stabilisation), and dual-tone LED flash. The rear camera is also capable of shooting videos in 4K (2160p) resolution. On the front, the handset features a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter with facial recognition technology.
On the connectivity front, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 offers 2.2 dual band Wi-Fi technology which allows for better and wider connectivity. Apart from this, the dual-SIM (nano + nano) smartphone also offers various connectivity options including with 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2×2 MIMO), Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS/A-GPS/GLONASS, Beidou, a 3.5mm audio jack and a USB-Type C port for superfast charging and data transfer. Sensors on the device include Fingerprint (rear-mounted), Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Ambient Light sensor, Barometer, E-Compass, and Ultrasonic Proximity sensor. On the battery front, the Mi Mix 2 comes packed with a decent non-removable 3,400mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology support. Dimensionally, the Mi Mix 2 standard variant measures 151.8 x 75.5 x 7.7mm and weighs 185 grams, while the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Special Edition measures 150.5 x 74.6 x 7.7mm and weighs 187 grams.
