Supermoon (NASA)

The biggest and brightest full moon since 1948 will make an appearance on Monday, Nov. 14. The moon is coming this close to Earth after a gap of 69 years, and if you miss it this time then you will have to wait another 17 years for such a lunar sighting. NASA says we won’t see another like it until 2034.

The shape of the moon will be 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter. And the distance between the Earth and the moon will be 3,56,509 km, which is much less than the 3,84,400 km(the average distance) distance between the earth and the moon.

The Full Beaver Moon of November or the supermoon will be at the closest point in its orbit around the Earth, also called the perigee. In this phase,  the moon will lack any hint of shadows at the edges, giving it a more full look

Three times a year, the moon comes so close to the earth. This year, the moon was close on Oct. 16, the next date being Nov. 14 and the third date when the moon will be in easy touching or seeing distance will be Dec. 16. Moon came to the Earth for the first time on 16 October. The event will also take place on 14 November and 16 December. But on Monday, as the Earth’s moon will come, again it will come back to the date of 5th November 2034. So that’s why it has been named “Super-Close-Supermoon”.

But Monday’s phenomenon, a rare one, will be repeated only on Nov. 5 2034, hence it is being called the  “Super-Close-Supermoon”.

The moon will become full at 19:02 IST on Monday, so the best time to view it in India will be when the sun starts setting, that is late afternoon and early evening. Monday night, when you will look at the sky you will see one of the brightest moons of the century. But if it happens to be cloudy don’t despair, several live webcasts, will be available.
