In this modern era, “Fingerprint sensor” has become a common technological term, which we see in mobile devices, laptops, tablets and other devices. This feature is especially used for biometric authentication process. But if this feature is present on an external keyboard, how would you enjoy it? American technology company Microsoft has finally come up with a solution and all you need is to change your favourite keyboard. The company on Thursday silently unveiled a new keyboard, dubbed as the “Microsoft Modern Keyboard”. The new Modern Keyboard features a fingerprint scanner that is housed between the Alt and Ctrl keys of the keyboard so that it does not ruin another typing experience. Priced at $129.99 (approx. 8,400), the Modern Keyboard is now listed on Microsoft’s official US website with “Coming Soon” tag. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not revealed exactly when the keyboard will be launched nor there is any information about its international availability.
The Modern Keyboard looks very identical to the Surface Keyboard as it borrows same design from its younger sibling. The only changes are a new fingerprint ID scanner and its wired connection. The wired connector port is placed on the rear side of the keyboard. As we mentioned, Microsoft has added a Touch ID fingerprint scanner on its new Modern Keyboard to work with next generation of Windows 10 powered devices and to sign-in websites using Windows Hello. The keyboard comes equipped with Chiclet-style keys and aluminium frame, which Microsoft says it is robust and “virtually indestructible.”
The Modern Keyboard is not only compatible with Windows 10 devices, but it also runs on Windows 8.1, and 8, Android 4.4.2 to 5.0, Mac OS 10.10.5 and above devices, and iOS 8.1 to iOS 9.2.1. The keyboard can be used as wired or wireless via Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. The Bluetooth technology is enabling automatic pairing when you connect the cable at first OOBE. The Microsoft Modern Keyboard is powered by the two rechargeable AAA alkaline batteries, which the company claims give the keyboard a battery life of up to two months on a full charge. Dimensionally, the keyboard measures 420.9 x 112.6 x 19.3mm and weighs around 420 grams.
Apart from this keyboard, Microsoft has also announced a Modern Mouse which comes with a price tag of $49.99 (approx. Rs. 3,250). The Microsoft Modern Mouse sports a sleek, simple aesthetic design and a metal scroll wheel, making it a perfect partner to Microsoft Modern Keyboard. The Modern Mouse is also listed on Microsoft’s official website with same “Coming Soon” tag. The Mouse runs on two AAA alkaline batteries and compatible with most operating systems and devices that support Bluetooth 4.0 and above because it is wireless.
