Canadian actor Alan Thicke, known for his father role in the 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains” died on Tuesday at the age of 69. His death was confirmed by his publicist, Carleen Donovan to CBS News.
The publicist in a statement to the Associated Press said that the actor had died from a heart attack in Los Angeles and gave no further details regarding Thicke’s death.
Five decades is what Thicke’s career stretched about, where he played various roles, both on and off screen, from actor to writer to composer to talk show host and finally to being an author.
Gloria Loring, Thicke’s first wife said to FOX411, “Thank you for your kindness concerning Alan Thicke’s passing. It is a shock. We were all just together for Thanksgiving. He was talented, funny and deeply devoted to his family. Rest in peace, dear one.”
He will mostly be remembered for his role as the psychiatrist Dr. Jason Seaver and more as the open-hearted parent and husband in the sitcom, “Growing Pains” who bought his office into his home in order to be closer to the family and look after his kids so that his wife could give life to her reporting career. This sitcom which became a hit made him the amazing ‘father figure’ for many who used to watch the TV series. “Growing Pains” was aired from 1985 and ran until 1992.
Thicke also did cameos in various films and television shows like “How I Met Your Mother,” often as himself. He also recently appeared on Netflix’s “Fuller House,” another reboot of a 1980s sitcom and on NBC’s drama, “This Is Us.”
Alan Thicke was born in Ontario, Canada in 1947 and began his career first in the Canadian television platform before moving toward the American television field. The singer Robin Thicke is Alan Thicke’s and first wife Gloris Loring’s son.
