Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is the municipal corporation responsible for infrastructural assets of Greater Bangalore. It is the fourth largest municipal corporation in India. The civic body is coming up with the idea of effective door to door collection waste system.
Bengaluru generates over 3500 tonnes of waste each day out of which 1400 tonnes is wet waste. For this BBMP is preparing a software which will track the garbage disposal of all the households. Furthermore they will be able to track the households who have not disposed off in the formal door to door collection on daily basis. BBMP has already implemented a GIS system for mapping the 19 lakh properties across the city.
BBMP divides the city into blocks with 750 houses each. In addition, there is a local officer of each block who will be having the Property Identification (PID) numbers of all the residents. Also,he will be personally dealing with any issues regarding waste disposal of any resident.
The purpose behind is to keep a check on unauthorised waste collections. The process says that if any resident is not disposing off through the correct process, he will be fined. BBMP may recover the fine at the time of property tax payment. Also owner of the property is responsible even when tenant is not following the system.
In addition BBMP also conducts a trial in Yelahanka with a manual record keeping system so that everyone disposes off the garbage.
It is an effective and efficient method of disposing off the trash. Firstly, it will keep the city clean and green. Secondly, the owners will be aware about disposing off in a prescribed manner and to maintain cleanliness. Furthermore, the disposal system can segregate and recycle trash accordingly.
