“The decision by HMD to launch its first Android smartphone into China is a reflection of the desire to meet the real world needs of consumers in different markets around the world. With over 552 million smartphone users in China in 2016, a figure that is predicted to grow to more than 593 million users by 2017, it is a strategically important market where premium design and quality is highly valued by consumers,” HMD said in its press release.

However, it will not be the only Nokia branded smartphone coming out this year. “The Nokia 6 marks the first step on our journey, with more to come in 2017,” said Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global in the press release. HMD launched some new Nokia branded basic phones last month.

Nokia 6 will be the first Nokia branded smartphone since 2014. Nokia sold its entire mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014. Before selling the mobile business to Microsoft Nokia made Lumia smartphones that ran on Windows. Microsoft continued making cheaper feature phones under Nokia’s name but started making Lumia smartphones under its own name.

In May 2016 Microsoft sold the feature phone business to FIH Mobile Ltd & HMD Global for $350 million. On closing of the deal Microsoft transferred all its feature phone assets, brands, services, care network and other assets. However, Microsoft will continue to produce its own Windows devices with the help of its OEM partners.
