Swiss star Roger Federer starts 2017 with a bang, He defeated Rafael Nadal to win the 2017 Australian Open. Federer battled the Spaniard for five sets to seal the victory. With this win, Federer is a 18 time Grand Slam Champion and the oldest at 35 to play a Grand Slam final. Out of which he has won the Australian Open 5 times.
Roger Federer did not have an easy tournament. Throughout the tournament he faced top 10 ranked players. He faced Tomas Berdych in the round of 32 defeating him in three straight sets. Then he faced Japan’s Kei Nishikori whom he defeated in 5 hard fought sets. In the quarter finals he faced Mischa Zverev who in his last match shocked the world and defeated World Number 1 Andy Murray. Zverev could not recreate the magic and lost to Federer in straight sets. In his semi final match Federer faced fellow Swiss star Stan Wawrinka. Federer defeated Wawrinka in an epich five set thriller to set up a date with Rafael Nadal.
Federer and Nadal each won alternatively the first four sets. Federer won the first and third set while Nadal took the second and fourth set. Both players had their moments in the game especially in the fourth set. Nadal dug deep and levelled the set showing exactly why no one should ever count him out. The final score for the game is 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. With the games tie at 2 each the championship came down to the fifth set, Nadal started the set strong taking a 3-1 lead. But Federer showed everyone his his gritty style, came down from a break and fought back to take the final set. Federer for the first time since 2007 Wimbledon Final defeated Nadal.
A visibly emotional Federer lifted a grand slam title for the first time since 2011. A well deserved victory for the Swiss star indeed.
