Lifestyle changes, eating habits, and tiresome competitive life has put women in a danger zone. Health has now become a least concern for them, prioritizing other things. Heart disease is one of the major health concern they set aside.

According to a survey in US, an estimated 43 million women have heart disease and yet they are unaware of it. Dr. Mary Ann McLaughlin is a medical director of the Mount Sinai Health System’s Cardiac Health Program.

As a part of the American Heart Month in February, Dr. McLaughlin gave certain key tips to have a healthy heart. She also highlighted on how to protect themselves. She listed down 5 major points.

  1. After reaching menopause, women should regularly take stress test. After 10 years, they must follow this on monthly basis. If in case, they have a family history of heart disease or of obesity, this test is a must. The stress test should be taken before the start of a vigorous exercise routine or while having shortness of breath when walking uphill.
  2. Exercise, meditation and yoga, prove to be a good medication to reduce emotional stress levels. Emotional stress is a bigger risk factor in women than in men.
  3. A good knowledge about heart attack is very much necessary. Most of the symptoms differ for men and women. Some of these include, nausea, jaw pain, shortness of breath and extreme fatigue.
  4. Limiting alcohol use. While some alcohol can boost good cholesterol, too much can lead to heart rhythm disorders and increased risk of stroke.
  5. Watch out during flights, hours long meetings and activities that need a long time sitting posture. Moving legs often, walking at intervals can reduce the risk of blood clots. Drinking plenty of water can also come to aid.

A woman always plays a crucial role in the well-being of  family and society. To take care of her heart is the most important priority of all.
