Acclaimed actor Kamal Haasan is clearly not a happy man with the government’s measures to implement the GST (Goods and Services tax) rates for the Tamil film industry. Speaking to the media yesterday, the veteran thespian conveyed his displeasure to the sky-high GST percentage, proposed at 28 percent now.
Kamal said, “The regional film industry will hit a major roadblock as a result of the GST set at 28 percent now. I request that the government consider setting it at 12 percent since it would be quite apt. If at all these high GST rates aren’t brought down, I have very few options rather than to quit cinema, “.
He further added, “I would like to point out that we are from Kollywood and charging us at as high as 28 percent akin to Hollywood standards will only impact Tamil cinema in a negative manner. Cinema is an art and should not be treated like gambling. I once again request the government to reconsider their stance on GST and reduce it so it will benefit everyone,”.
We will just have to wait and see how things turn out now.
