Chelsea faced Liverpool in a top-of-the-table teams clash.
Liverpool drew 1-1 against the league leaders Chelsea in a high-tempo clash at Anfield in the premier league. Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet saved a penalty from Diego Costa to deny Chelsea a victory away from home. Both the managers, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp were at their vocal best, cheering their players to lift up their games.
David Luiz scored from a free-kick in the 24th minute to give Chelsea the lead. His ballistic shot hit the post and went over the goal line, catching the Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet off-guard.
Georginio Wijnaldum brought parity to the scoreline in the 57th minute. He scored from a header after a series of passes inside the Chelsea box. Mignolet then saved a penalty in the 76th minute after Costa was fouled by Joel Matip inside the Liverpool box. None of the two teams were able to find the back of the net from there onwards as both the teams earned a point apiece.
Arsenal were expected to close in the gap, instead they dropped all three points at home
Meanwhile in other matches, Arsenal’s hopes of closing in the gap on league leaders Chelsea were dashed as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Watford at home. Younes Kaboul scored the first goal via a free-kick in the 10th minute while Troy Deeney doubled the lead minutes later. Aleix Iwobi, assisted by Sanchez, scored for Arsenal in the 58th minute to cut down the visitors’ lead to a single goal. Arsenal pushed hard in the dying minutes of the match but failed to score.
Tottenham also dropped points at Sunderland after playing out a 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light. They were able to climb up to the second position owing to a better goal difference over Arsenal.
Last year’s champions Leicester City were beaten 1-0 by Burnley at the Turf Moor. They dropped down to 16th position, just two points clear of the relegation zone. Swansea City beat Southampton 2-1 while Crystal Palace beat Bournemouth 2-0 in other matches.
The Manchester clubs, United and City, face Hull City and West Ham respectively while Everton face Stoke City on the 2nd of February to complete the week 23 matches of Premier League.
