ZTE sub-brand Nubia has expanded its product portfolio with the launch of two new camera-centric smartphones, namely, Nubia Z17S and Z17 miniS in the Chinese market. Both the new smartphones come equipped with four cameras—two rear-facing sensors and two front-facing sensors, which are also their main highlight. Among these two smartphones, the Nubia Z17S is a premium smartphone, while the Z17 miniS is a watered-down version of the Z17S. However, the Nubia Z17S comes in two variants based on its RAM and internal storage configuration: Nubia Z17S with 6GB LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB internal storage, and Nubia Z17S with 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB internal storage. On the other hand, the Nubia Z17 miniS also comes in two variants based on its body colour: Nubia Z17 miniS Black Gold, Nubia Z17 miniS Deep Blue and Nubia Z17 miniS Aegean Blue colour.

All these aforementioned variants or models are now available for pre-order, while the smartphones will be going on sale in China starting October 19 in Black, Blue (for Nubia Z17S), Black Gold, Deep Blue and Aegean Blue colour options (for Nubia Z17 miniS).

Design wise, the Nubia Z17S comes built with 7 series aviation grade aluminium alloy frame with a bezel-less display, 3D glass on the back and rounded corners, giving it an overall premium outlook. On the other side, the Nubia Z17 miniS also has a metal frame with metal edges and 3D glass body. Both the smartphones feature on-screen navigation buttons and a fingerprint scanner for biometric security (Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Nubia Z17S model and Front-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Nubia Z17 miniS model). The volume up-down keys as well as the power/lock buttons are all placed on the right-hand edge of the smartphones and a traditional red circular capacitive home button is situated on the front panel just below the display (for Nubia Z17 miniS model). The speaker grilles are seen at the bottom edge of the handsets along with a USB Type-C charging port sitting in the middle.

Nubia Z17S

Starting with the Nubia Z17S, the handset comes with a 5.73-inch Full HD+ display with a screen resolution 2040×1080 pixels and offers 96 percent NTSC colour gamut. The display is covered with a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood, the device is powered by a 2.45GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 540 GPU to handle the graphics. In terms of memory, the new Nubia Z17S is backed by a 6GB/8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage. The internal storage can’t be further expanded due to the absence of a microSD card slot. Talking about its software front, the Nubia Z17S runs company’s proprietary Nubia 5.1 custom UI skin, based on Google’s Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system.

In terms of photography, the new Nubia Z17S houses a dual rear-facing camera setup that comes combined with one 12-megapixel primary camera with Sony IMX362 sensor, an f/1.8 aperture, 1.4μm pixel size, and dual-tone LED flash, and one 23-megapixel secondary camera with Sony IMX318 sensor, and an f/2.0 aperture. The rear camera setup also features 2x optical zoom, Dual Pixel autofocus and company’s proprietary NeoVision 7.0 image software package. Talking about its selfie camera, the Nubia Z17S sports a dual front-facing camera setup, which is the main highlight of this device. However, the dual front-facing camera setup that includes two 5-megapixel sensors with an f/2.2 aperture and 79.9-degree wide-angle lens.

In terms of connectivity, Nubia Z17S supports 2.2 dual-band Wi-Fi technology for providing a better and wider connectivity. Connectivity options on the device also include dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (with MIMO technology), Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, GPS/A-GPS/Glonass, 7.1 channel DTS audio, NFC, and a USB-Type C port for superfast charging and data transfer. Sensors on the device include Fingerprint (rear-mounted), Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Ambient Light sensor, Digital Compass sensor, and Proximity sensor. On the battery front, the Nubia Z17S is fuelled by a decent 3100mAh battery that supports NeoCharge 2.5 technology for fast charging. Dimension wise, the handset measures at 147.46 x 72.68 x 8.5 mm and weighs 170 grams.

Moving on to the lower version, the Nubia Z17 miniS features a 5.2-inch Full-HD 2.5D curved glass display with a screen resolution of 1080 × 1920 pixels and a scratch resistance Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top. The smartphone draws its power from a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 octa-core processor clubbed with Adreno 510 GPU. In terms of memory, the Nubia Z17 miniS comes loaded with a 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There is no option for memory expansion. On the software front, the Nubia Z17 miniS runs company’s own Nubia 5.0 user interface, based on Google’s Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system.

In terms of optics, the new Nubia Z17 miniS comes with a dual primary camera setup on the rear. One camera sports a 13-megapixel full-light Monochrome sensor, while another camera comes with a 13-megapixel RGB sensor. The rear camera features on the smartphone include Sony IMX258 sensor, an f/2.2 aperture, Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), 4K video recording support, dual-tone LED flash and company’s proprietary NeoVision 7.0 software package. On the front, the smartphone also houses dual front-facing camera setup, which includes one 16-megapixel primary sensor with 80-degree wide angle lens and an f/2.0 aperture, and one 5-megapixel secondary sensor with an f/2.2 aperture.

In terms of connectivity, the dual-SIM-supported Nubia Z17 miniS offers 4G voLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz & 5.0GHz), Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, GPS/A-GPS/Glonass, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB-Type C port for superfast charging and other. Sensors on the device include Fingerprint (front-mounted/underneath the Home button), Accelerometer, Gyroscope, E-Compass, Ambient Light sensor, and Proximity sensor. On the battery front, the Nubia Z17 miniS gets its strength from a 3,200mAh non-removable battery. Dimension wise, the Nubia Z17 miniS measures 147.5 × 71.2 × 7.6 mm and weighs 155 grams.
