Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu won her first Super Series title in the China Open final against China’s Sun Yu. This is her first win after this year’s August Olympics. The other Indians to win this tournament before Sindhu are Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Shrikant.
Sindhu, world no. 11, earned a large 12 game point at 20-8 in the first game. Sun saved three points before Sindhu finished it by hitting a return right into Sun’s face. Sun was 21-11 down in less than 20 minutes.
Sun had a big benefit over Sindhu at the net. But Sindhu scored in agility and speed. She took the second game at 20-17. Sun was more aggressive of the two.
Sindhu started the third game with enthusiasm. Both players were level at 6-6. But Sindhu scored with her power-packed returns. She moved up to 10-6 as the Chinese player stumbled. Sindhu had an 11-8 advantage at break. Sun changed tactics and tried to change the pace of the game and slowed the game a bit but she was forced into errors and Sindhu went up to 19-11. Sindhu then seized the match point as Sun did not hit the shuttle as it touched the back line.
Sindhu faced tough opposition on her way to the 21-11, 17-21. 21-11 win. She faced South Korea’s sung Ji Hyun and China’s He Bingjiao. Sindhu’s first Super Series final was at the Denamrk Open last year which she lost against Li Xuerei, the 2012 Olympic champion.
