Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has just expanded its popular “Y” series of smartphone portfolio with the launch of a new full-screen display smartphone, dubbed as the “Vivo Y79” in the Chinese tech market. Carried a sticker price of CNY 2,498 (approximately Rs. 24,350), the new Vivo Y79 is now available for pre-order in China on TMall, JD.com, Vivo Mall as well as company’s online store, while the same will be going on sale in China starting November 11 in four body colour options including Black, Rose Gold, Matte Black and Champagne Gold. Basically, the Vivo Y79 smartphone is the re-branded variant of the Vivo V7+ smartphone, which was launched in India in September this year with a price tag of Rs. 21,990. All specifications and features of the Vivo Y79 are same to same as we have seen in the Vivo V7+, except its processing unit. The Y79 comes with a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, while the Vivo V7+ is powered by a 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor. The main highlights of the Vivo Y79 are its huge 5.99-inch FullView display, and a 24-megapixel selfie camera with Moonlight Glow soft selfie light.

In terms of design, the Vivo Y79 smartphone borrows a lot of its design languages from the company’s latest Vivo V7+. The Vivo Y79 sports an all-metal unibody design and a sleek back finish with curved metal edges, meaning that the devices come with a relatively premium build quality. The smartphone also features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, that is housed on the back panel of the device. The power-key button and volume up-down keys are all placed on the right-hand edge of the devices and a 3.5mm audio jack is placed on the very bottom edge of the phone. The single rear camera setup is still positioned exactly the top left corner of the rear panel, while the front-facing camera is fixed on the top left corner of the front panel. The speaker grilles are also seen at the bottom edge of the handset along with a microUSB charging port sitting in the middle.

As far as specifications are concerned, the Vivo Y79 comes decorated with a huge 5.99-inch HD IPS ‘FullView’ display with a screen resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and a scratch resistance 2.5D curved glass coating on top. The display has an 18:9 aspect ratio and offers a stunning 84.4 percent screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a 2.0GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clubbed with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 256GB with the help of a microSD card. Talking about its software front, the Vivo Y79 runs company’s proprietary FunTouch custom UI skin, based on Google’s Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system. The smartphone also features a rear-mounted fingerprint recognition button for the biometric authentication process. Apart from its fingerprint sensor, the smartphone also supports Face Wake facial recognition technology for high-grade biometric security. The new Face Wake feature can be used to unlock the smartphone by scanning different facial features.

For photography, the Vivo Y79 features a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) and a dual LED flash for excellent low-light photography. The main camera features include Ultra HD, Normal, Face Beauty, Panorama, HDR, Pro Mode, Slow motion video, and much more. The rear camera is also able to capture 64-megapixel Ultra HD photos by merging four pictures into one. On the front, the Vivo Y79 houses a 24-megapixel front-facing camera with 1/2.78-inch sensor, an f/2.0 aperture and Moonlight Glow flash unit for capturing bright selfies even in low light conditions. The front camera also supports Face Beauty 7.0 and Portrait mode. Face Beauty 7.0 detects the facial features and captures the details, while the Portrait Mode helps in blur the background by focusing totally on the subject.

In terms of connectivity, the Vivo Y79 supports various connectivity options including dual-SIM dual standby, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS/A-GPS, USB OTG, a 3.5mm audio jack and a microUSB 2.0 port for charging and data transfer. Sensors on the device include a Proximity sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Accelerometer, Fingerprint (rear-mounted), Gyroscope and E-compass sensor. On the battery front, the Vivo Y79 sips its all power from a powerful 3,225mAh non-removable battery. Dimensionally, the handset measures 155.87 x 75.74 x 7.7mm and weighs 160 grams.
