German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz on Friday launched a new entry-level diesel variant, “the Mercedes-Benz E220d” in the Indian auto market at a price tag of Rs 57.14 lakh (Ex-showroom, Pune). The newly launched E220d LBW (long-wheelbase) version is the third variant in the Mercedes Benz’s E-class sedan lineup. Carried at such an attractive price tag, the new E220d has been positioned below the existing diesel-powered E350d, which is already on sale in the country. Mercedes-Benz also offers a petrol variant in India – the Mercedes-Benz E200, which comes with a price tag of Rs. 56.15 lakh, while the diesel-powered E350d is priced at Rs. 69.47 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Pune). Further, the company has also announced a maintenance package worth Rs 76,600 on the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E220d to take care annual maintenance charges with unlimited mileage.

Power

Talking about its mechanical department, the new Mercedes-Benz E220d luxury sedan is powered by the new all-aluminium 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that generates 194 bhp of peak power against the peak torque of 400 Nm between 1,600 rpm and 2,800 rpm. The engine is mated to a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission that sends the power to the rear wheels. The diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz E220d needs only 7.8 seconds to reach 100kmph from engine start and has a top speed of 240km per hour.

Exterior & Interior Features

Being an E-Class luxury sedan member, the new Mercedes-Benz E220d sports various exciting features such as LED headlamps with Daytime running lights (DRLs), LED tail lamps, 17-inch 5 spoke alloy wheels, Panoramic sunroof, and Rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Mercedes has increased the wheelbase of the new E220d sedan by 205mm making it more spacious in this segment. Dimensionally, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB measures 5,063mm in length, 1,860mm in width and 1,494mm in height and has a wheelbase of 3079 mm.

Inside the cabin, the new Mercedes-Benz E220d LWB houses a 12.3-inch COMAND online touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Reclining rear seats with comfort headrest, Leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, Power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, 64-shades of ambient lighting, Three-zone THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, and Steering-mounted touchpads. But unfortunately, the luxury car misses out on Air Body Control air suspension, Burmester 3D surround sound system, Memory function for the front seats, and 360-degree aerial-view camera.

Safety

In terms of safety, the new Mercedes Benz E220d offers 7 airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), ESP stability control, Parking pilot with Parktronic Active Parking Assist, Parking Sensors and Self-park technology. In the Indian lucrative market, the new Mercedes-Benz E220d LBW luxury sedan competes against the likes of Volvo S90, Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF.
