Monaco beat Manchester City 3-1 in the second leg of the Round of 16 tie in State Louis II in Monaco to win 6-6 on aggregate based on the away goals rule. The victory took Monaco to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the second time in three years.

Monaco took an early lead through a Mbappe’s tap-in goal on a cross in the 8th minute. The Principality club doubled their lead through Fabinho, the talented Portuguese Bernardo Silva finding him amongst a group of defenders. Manchester City could not manage any shots on target and looked completely out of sorts in the first half.

Manchester City looked a completely different side in the second half, pressing Monaco high on the ground. City had many attempts on the goal, most of them involving Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero. In the 62nd minute, Sane cut through the Monaco defence to play the ball to Aguero but the Argentine’s shot went sailing over the goalpost. Monaco’s goalkeeper Subasic padded away Aguero’s shot on a one-on-one situation minutes later. A very busy Subasic then swept away another attempt from Aguero.

Leroy Sane scored on a rebound when initially Sterling’s shot was saved by Subasic. Monaco soon scored their third of the night when Bakayoko headed a goal on a freekick in the 77th minute. No more goals were scored in the match thereafter as Monaco managed to hold on to their fort.

This was Pep Guardiola’s first exit in the Round of 16 tie in the Champions League.

In other match of the night, Atletico Madrid drew against Bayer Leverkusen 0-0. Atletico prevailed through to the quarterfinals based on the 4-2 scoreline they managed in the first leg.

With these two matches, the Round of 16 matches of the Champions League drew to a close. The final eight teams will fight out for a place in the final-four now in the quarterfinals.
