The 21-year old Indian puts up a dominant display to defeat Carolina Marin

Third seed PV Sindhu won the Yonex Sunrise India Open super series by beating top seed Carolina Marin 21-19 21-16 in the finals. Playing in front of a vocal home crowd at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi, Sindhu defeated the Spaniard in 47 minutes, thereby reversing the result of last year’s Olympics final.

Sindhu began the match with a balanced approach of aggression and calmness which reflected in her smashes and drop shots. She began dominating the first game initially and won six consecutive points to lead 6-1. Marin then bagged some points for herself as the scorecard read 9-7. The two then had a neck-to-neck contest and the first game ended 21-19 in favour of Sindhu.

Sindhu started the second game aggressively and soon took a five point lead over Marin at 14-9. Marin inched closer to the Indian and reached 15-13 but lost the next three points to succumb to 18-13. Sindhu reached match point at 20-15 and had five championship points in hand. She lost the first point but won the subsequent to win the second game 21-16 and become the Women’s Singles champion.

In the Men’s Singles, third-seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won the championship. He beat the seventh seeded Chou Tien Chen of Taipei 21-13 21-10 in straight sets.

In the Men’s Doubles, fourth-seeded Indonesian pair of Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo won the Super Series title. Seventh-seeded Japanese pair of Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yomenoto won the Women’s Doubles title. Second-seeded Chinese pair of Kai Lu and Yaqiong Huang won the Mixed Doubles title at the super series.
