Hundreds of people were evacuated and at least 12 revellers are being treated for serious burns after a suspected acid attack during a mass brawl at a trendy east London nightclub.
Around 600 panicked revellers were evacuated from Wringer & Mangle nightclub in Mangle E8 in Sidworth Street, Dalston, east London, after an “unknown corrosive substance” was flung across the venue.
Around 200 reportedly had left the premises before the arrival of emergency services, with a further 400 evacuated from the building believed to be the club.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The only information that we have is that it was an unknown corrosive substance thrown within the nightclub.
“It was identified by a pH paper test as a strong acidic substance.”
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called at approximately 1.10am on 17 April, after members of the public complained of a noxious substance sprayed by a male suspect when a row broke out between two groups.
He said two men in their 20s remain in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
They said no arrests had been made and officers were continuing to investigate.
The police added there was no evidence to suggest the attack was gang related.
The London Ambulance Service said: “We sent multiple resources to the scene including paramedics in cars, ambulance crews, a number of officers, an advanced paramedic and our hazardous area resource team.”
“London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene.
“Nine people have been treated for minor burns at the scene and taken to east London hospitals by LAS.
“Another two people presented themselves at an east London hospital with similar injuries. All victims’ injuries are non-life threatening.”
Eyewitnesses have told of an “acid attack” that left revellers with horrific facial burns.
