The Indian arm of the South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai Motor India on Tuesday launched its 5th generation of the mid-size sedan, Hyundai Verna in the Indian auto market. The next generation Verna comes equipped with improved styling, futuristic design, dynamic performance, exciting features, and a host of smart and luxury equipment. The new generation 2017 Hyundai Verna was first launched in China back in September last year. The 2017 Hyundai Verna sedan has been offered by the company in six different variants — Hyundai Verna E, Hyundai Verna EX, Hyundai Verna EX AT, Hyundai Verna SX, Hyundai Verna SX (O) & Hyundai Verna SX (O) AT and will be available in both petrol and diesel powertrain options. Among these three, four variants come equipped with manual transmission setup and other two comes with automatic transmission setup.

Prices for the petrol version start at Rs. 7.99 lakh, while the diesel range starts at Rs. 9.19 lakh (all prices are mentioned Ex-showroom, Delhi). Note that, the prices of new Verna are introductory and will be valid for the first 20,000 customers only. After reaching 20,000 buyers, the car’s price will be revised. The new Hyundai Verna is based on the company’s new K2 platform and is very identical to the new gen Elantra as the fifth generation avatar of Hyundai Verna borrows its styling and design language from the new generation Hyundai Elantra that came out last year in India. Hyundai claims that the new architecture is more rigid and offers better crash protection than the outgoing model. The new Hyundai Verna sports a super body structure which is built from 50 percent more advanced high strength steel (AHSS) making it more reliable, stronger, lighter, longer, and more spacious than the previous model. The 2017 Verna is available in seven colour choice options including Fiery Red, Sleek Silver, Phantom Black, Polar White, Star Dust, Flame Orange and Siena Brown.

Power & Performance:

Talking about its mechanical department, the new-gen Hyundai Verna comes in two engine variants — one petrol variant and one diesel variant. The petrol variant Hyundai Verna is powered by a 1,591cc, 4-cylinder, dual VTVT petrol engine that produces 121bhp of peak power @ 6,400 rpm against the peak torque of 151 Nm @ 4,850 rpm. On the other hand, the diesel variant Hyundai Verna is powered by a 1,582cc, 4-cylinder, U2 CRDi diesel engine that generates 126bhp of peak power @ 4000 rpm against the peak torque of 260 Nm @ 1500-3,000 rpm. Both the diesel and petrol engines come mated to a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions. The ARAI approved fuel efficiency figures for the manual transmission equipped variants of the new Verna are 17.7 kmpl (petrol) and 24.75 kmpl (diesel). On the other side, the ARAI approved fuel efficiency figures for the automatic transmission equipped models of the new Verna are 15.92 kmpl (petrol) and 21 kmpl (diesel).

Exterior and Interior:

The new Verna receives a Hyundai’s traditional chrome cascade grille with horizontal chrome slats, projector headlamps (halogen lamps in lower spec variants) with LED daytime running light (DRL), projector Fog lamps with chrome surround for strong and focused illumination. The new lighting array flank the large cascade design chrome grille which is garnished with chrome. The exterior styling is based on the company’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. The sporty character of the sedan is further enhanced by chrome finished door handles and dual tone ORVMs with side indicator. At the rear section, the new Verna features a triple-pod LED tail lamp, new tail gate and new dual tone bumper.

The base variants (E and EX) of the new Verna come with 15-inch steel rims wrapped in 185/65 R15 tyres, while top-spec (SX and SX(O) variants sits on 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels shod with 195/55 R16 tyres. The new Hyundai Verna comes equipped with new McPherson Sturt suspension setup and coil springs in the front and couple torsion beam axle (CTBA) with vertical absorber along with Hydraulic rebound stopper rear for improved damping. The vehicle sports disc brakes in the front and drum brakes at the rear. Dimensionally, the fifth generation Hyundai Verna measures 4,440mm in length, 1,729 mm in width, 1,475 mm in height. It has a standard wheelbase of 2,600 mm and offers a ground clearance of 170 mm, making the car 65mm longer and 29mm wider than the previous generation Verna. The wheelbase is also longer by 30mm.

Talking about its interior, the fifth generation Hyundai Verna comes with dual tone black and beige colour scheme which is complemented by leather upholstery. The dashboard layout also gets a new touch. The new Verna also gets company’s new generation Audio Video Navigation (AVN) infotainment system, which includes a 7-inch touchscreen LCD display compatible with Bluetooth, USB, voice recognition, Hyundai iBlue smartphone app, MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. MirrorLink technology allows you to pair a smartphone with the car. Lower-spec variants get a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the high-end versions get a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The new Verna also comes equipped with rear adjustable headrest, sliding front centre console armrest, cooled glove box (to keep water chilled), ventilated front seats (useful in humid, sweaty conditions), electric sunroof, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, dual USB charging points, power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, integrated rear window curtains and supervision cluster integrated with a monochromic 3.5-inch TFT LCD screen that shows trip data, and other vehicle information like settings, audio and others. Apart from this, the new Hyundai Verna features an Arkamys 6-speaker surround audio system for superior audio experience.

Safety Features:

In terms of safety, the 2017 Hyundai Verna sedan offers various safety features including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), Dual front Airbags as standard, Parking Assist with Reverse Camera, Central locking with remote control, Child safety lock, Rain sensing wipers, ISOFIX Anchorage as standard — a child seat restraint system as standard, indicators on ORVM and much more. Interestingly, the top-of-the-line SX(O) variant gets a total of six airbags. Some of the other features on the vehicle include Cruise Control, Push button Start-Stop with Smart Entry and Rear Curtain.

In the Indian lucrative market, the new generation Hyundai Verna will compete against the likes of Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento and newly launched Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo edition.
