At this year’s IFA, in Berlin, world’s No.3 smartphone maker Huawei announced that its upcoming phones including next month’s Mate 10 Pro, and other future phones will possess the company’s own built processing chips, named Kirin! Chief Executive of Huawei, Richard Yu revealed an upcoming new chip for their smartphones that, the company claims, will outrun the processors used in Apple’s and Samsung’s currently used phones across the globe.
Huawei’s new phones Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be released next month, on October 16 and they will be coming up with Huawei’s newly made Kirin 970 processors, instead of borrowing from Qualcomm, like Samsung and other makers who use their phone chips for faster performance.
With this, Huawei will become the 2nd phone maker after Apple, to use its ‘home made’ processing chips in their phones. Apple uses its own built ‘A series’ processing chips in the iPhones.
Chief Executive Yu, also said that their new Kirin 970 chips will use an AI inside them that will help in making the phones more personalized, or in other words, knowing their users’ preferences by knowing their interests. He told that, AI can enable real-time language translation, responds to voice commands, take advantage of augmented reality, which overlays text, sounds, graphics and video on real-world images phone users see in front of them.
The company says that the Kirin 970 chips will use lower consumption and deliver more faster performance to the users, as compared to today’s chipsets used by the world’s two of the most powerful phone makers, Apple and Samsung.
The company even believes that their new chips will be able to beat even the upcoming ‘new iPhone or iPhone 8 from Apple-set to be launched on September 12, 2017.
“Compared with Samsung and Apple, we have advantages,” Yu said in the media interaction. He told that the newly announced Kirin chips will also preserve the battery life of the phones by upto 50%.
As Huawei tells about the chips, it has described the chips as a Neutral Processing Unit (NPU) for the phones which comprise the graphics, classic computing, image and digital signal, together. Since earlier all these aspects required separate chips which used to take more space and ultimately slowing the functionality in the phone.
The Kirin 970 chip is designed by Huwaei’s HiSilicon chip design business. Plus, they are built using the 10 nanometer production lines of contract manufacturer TSMC.
