One of the best/worst lines in Star Wars history is delivered by Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones. Talking about his childhood on the desert planet of Tatooine, he tells Padme “I don’t like sand. It’s rough, and coarse, and irritating, and it gets everywhere.” While there aren’t a lot of comparisons to be drawn between George Lucas’ space opera and the Assassin’s Creed series, the latest trailer for Assassin’s Creed Origins would seem to suggest that Anakin did at least get one thing right.

The latest trailer, From Sand, shows a lot of Egypt literally dissolving, melting away into sand before being carried away on the breeze. Things start small, with a single street-cat the first to fall victim to the great sand plague. But it all scales up pretty fast, with ships, soldiers, and eventually the Great Pyramids themselves falling away.

The trailer ends with the game’s protagonist, Bayek, striding confidently into an oncoming sandstorm, followed by the message “where it all ends, it begins.” To be honest, I have no idea what that means, other than referencing the fact that Origins is canonically the first Assassin’s Creed game.

Fortunately, the trailer’s description offers a little more detail, telling us that Origins will feature “a civilization on the brink of collapse.” Thankfully, that makes it seem as though this is all metaphorical, that the game doesn’t feature a previously-unannounced dissolution mechanic, and that Bayek will play a pivotal role in halting the less-literal collapse of the Egyptian empire.
