After the big revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment scandal, the campaign #metoo (the campaign which is inspiring the women in the industry to break their silence and share their stories of sexual harassment), seems to take a strong hold over every woman in the Hollywood industry at the moment. And the current star actress to come out and share her ‘dark experience’ is none other than Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.
On Monday night, the Silver Linings Playbook star attended Elle’s Women in Hollywood event where she spoke about her early struggling years and how she was asked to compromise to get higher in her career.
She said that as a teenager when she was just starting her career, she was asked to take part in a ‘naked line-up’ where other women like alongside her, were also standing in a line, being ‘nude’ and their private parts were covered with paste-ons.
It was when a female producer asked her to do that so that she could get more opportunities!
“After that degrading and humiliating lineup, the female producer told me I should use the naked photos of myself as inspiration for my diet.”
She also told that when she went to a producer to inquire about this kind of process, “he responded by telling me he didn’t know why everyone thought I was so fat; he thought I was perfectly ‘fuckable.’”
The actor wasn’t a star at that time and due to which she felt ‘trapped’, she said.
“I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly, and I found it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate,” she said. “A lot of the feelings I’ve been having about anxiety, about being honest, the guilt for not speaking up earlier or taking action. True disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger that I felt at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment.”
Addressing the crowd at the event, she told, “in a dream world, everyone is treated with the exact same level of respect. But, until we reach that goal, I will lend my ear. I will lend my voice to any boy, girl, man, or woman who does not feel like they can protect themselves.”
