When Grindhouse, a double-feature B-movie, was released way back in 2007, it was received positively by the critics, but couldn’t make it big on the box-office, and eventually tanked. But it was a brave attempt about ‘hitting back on exploitation’ and sexual harassment of humans in various aspects, as depicted by the female lead Cherry (played by Rose McGowan), from one of the two movies of Grindhouse-Planet Terror.
Recently, during a media interaction the director of Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez, who worked along with Quentin Tarantino (who directed the other movie of Grindhouse, Death Proof) revealed that his movie was actually a kind of revenge from the recently exposed Weinstein film company head, Harvey Weinstein, who had sexually assaulted (and raped) Planet Terror’s lead actress Rose McGowan, back in the 90s.
Rodriguez told that casting Rose McGowan was kind of hitting back at Harvey Weinstein for his animal behavior and sexual instinct against women.
When McGowan was struggling after the gruesome incident with her and the Weinstein effect that caused her (losing) many movies, Rodriguez (who met her in 2005 at the Cannes Film Festival and was also her boyfriend from 2006 to 2009), came upto her.
“I then revealed to Rose right then and there that I was about to start writing a movie with Quentin Tarantino, a double-feature throwback to ‘70s exploitation movies, and that if she was interested, I would write her a BAD ASS character and make her one of the leads,” Rodriguez said.
He further told:
“I wanted her to have a starring role in a big movie to take her OFF the blacklist, and the best part is that we would have Harvey’s new Weinstein Company pay for the whole damn thing.”
In his statement, given to Variety, Rodriguez wrote that, “These past few weeks have given me new clarity and hope by seeing the tide finally turn, seeing Harvey finally on the run, and seeing all the brave women who have come forth with their own shocking and distressing stories of abuse.”
This month has seen a new wave of women, rising up and speaking on sexual harassment. Many prominent Hollywood personalities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Sean Young and Angelina Jolie have spoken and revealed the disgusting truths of Harvey Weinstein’s behavior, mis-conduct and harassment.
