If you want to live in a movie, experience heartache, angst, love, sorrow and immerse in a soul touching music, you’ve got to watch La La Land. Damien Chazelle’s second directorial venture is a musical comedy-drama which takes you back to Woody Allen’s world, oscillating between Everyone says I love you and into the deep magical chasms of Midnight in Paris. Starring handsome Ryan Gosling and sweet Emma Stone, this film is one of the best watch of this year.
The plot is very similar to what we have seen in thousand other movies. Boy meets a girl, they fall in love with a pinch of everlasting heartache. But it is not for the story line that La La land has achieved such a resounding applause. Gosling as Sebastian is gloomy moon-eyed pianist, working at local bars who dreams of owning his own Jazz bar. And then there is Mia, portrayed by Stone, who struggles to fulfil her aspirations of becoming a famous actress, dragging herself from one disappointing audition to another. They meet, fall for each other but their separate passions takes them to different routes. It is not a movie of fairytale endings. It’s a movie of harsh truths. It’s a movie for life.
But again, it is not the story line that holds the sole limelight in La La Land. It is the subtle depiction of lights, music and expression that leaves you wanting for more. Chazelle does a fantastic job weaving in the plot with the foot-tapping music. His directorial debut, Whiplash, had the same undertone. La La Land is a movie about reality and away from it too. Living in the space between dreams and actual life is what is evident in this film.
So, what are you waiting for? Catch La La Land and enjoy the magic that this musical will bring to your lives!
