When it was announced earlier this year that director Rick Famuyiwa had been roped in to take charge of one of the biggest films in the making, fans were undoubtedly ecstatic, to say the least. His work in Dope not only earned him a spotlight among the league of elite directors, but also DC Films’ The Flash. His name was announced after Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s initial choice, Seth Grahame-Smith, parted ways. That being said, Rick Famuiywa too has now exited the film owing to “creative differences”.
Famuyiwa joined The Flash in June and was giving it his all with script rewrites. The director even went on to cast Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup in pivotal roles. It is now being stated the director wanted the film to have a little “more edge”, which apparently the studio wasn’t interested in.
The director released an official statement confirming his exit from the project saying,
“When I was approached by Warner Bros and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day.
I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor, and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Brothers, DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”
The film is slated for a March 2018 release with filming to begin early next year. However, it is most likely there will be a delay in production now.
We will keep you posted on the future of The Flash and any further developments. Stay tuned.
