Australian Open Quarter-final lineups have been setup as tennis fans across the world are hoping for a “fairytale finals”. With top seeds in both the men’s and women’s singles out of contention, the fans are contemplating a showdown of the greats of the games in the AO finals, between the Williams sisters and Federer vs Nadal.
Top-seeds Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber were both knocked out on Day 7 of the tournament
On Monday, Nadal beat Gael Monfils 6-3,6-3,4-6,6-4 to set up a clash with third-seed Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals. The Canadian, Raonic beat Spaniard Bautista Agut 7-6,3-6,6-4,6-1. “Baby Federer” Grigor Dimitrov beat Denis Istomin to book his ticket to the quarters.
The eleventh-seed David Goffin created a mini-upset when he beat the eighth-seed Dominic Thiem. He will face Dimitrov in the quarters.
In the women’s singles, second-seed Serena Williams won in straight sets to enter the quarters. She will face ninth-seed Johanna Konta, who also won in straight sets against Russian Makarova. In other matches of the day, Karolina Pliskova won against Gavrilova in straight sets 6-3,6-3. Croat Lucic-Baroni’s dream run at this tournament continued as the 34-year old entered just her second singles Grand Slam quarter-final match of her career. She will face the fifth-seed Pliskova in the quarters.
On Tuesday, Stan Wawrinka will be in action against Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Roger Federer against Mischa Zverev in the Men’s singles category.
In Women’s singles, Venus Williams will face-off against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Garbine Muguruza will be facing CoCo Vandeweghe in their respective quarter-final matches.
