Dauntless, the co-op monster hunting RPG, is now available as part of an early access alpha. You can buy your way into the game via a Founder’s Pack, which will let you explore the Shattered Isles and slay some behemoths right now. As the game is currently in very early development, meaning not everything you can do in it is as clear as can be, we’ve put together some handy tips to help make your first hunts successful.
Our first tip may seem sacrilege in the land of mouse and keyboard, but Dauntless feels much better when played with a pad, trust us. There are quite a few actions you’ll be frequently performing – light and heavy attacks, dodges, activating specials, using your lantern. The close layout of a controller’s face buttons makes pulling them off a touch more natural than the keyboard bindings. You can, of course, re-bind some of the more awkward keys, but Dauntless’ movement and combat feels most at home on analogue sticks. A controller will also make our next tip a touch easier, too.
Target the camera
When battling one of the giant behemoths you’ll be constantly dodging out the way of incoming attacks, or overshooting your target with charging moves. Because of this constant movement it’s easy to find yourself looking in the wrong direction. That initially doesn’t sound an issue, but your character will always attack in the direction they are facing, not where your camera is looking. In a speedy melee battle, it’s all too easy to find yourself swinging at nothing but thin air.

Ideally Dauntless would have a lock-on system to keep behemoths firmly in your sights, but in absence of that, the next best thing is a camera centre function. This will swing your camera back to the behemoth, and when combined with a nudge in the right direction, will keep your character at the right attacking angle. It sounds overly simple and obvious, but keeping the camera centred on your foe is vital for a smoother battle. On a controller this is bound to clicking the left analogue stick, meaning you can easily tap it every few seconds to stay on target.
