Sets up final showdown against Carolina Marin

Third-seed PV Sindhu faced the second-seed South Korean Sung Ji Hyun in the semi-finals of Indian Open Super Series 2017 at Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi. Home favourite Sindhu comprehensively beat her Korean opponent 2-1 to reach the finals of the Super Series tournament. Sindhu had reached the semi-finals of the tournament after beating her fellow countrywoman Saina Nehwal.

The two players had a neck-to-neck fight in the first game before Sindhu raced to a 15-11 lead. At set point, Sindhu lead 20-17 and squandered just one point before winning the game 21-18 in 24 minutes.

The two were tied at 5-5 in the second game before Sung Ji Hyun raced to a 8-14 lead. Sindhu offered little resistance to the Korean then onwards and lost the second set 21-14 in 24 minutes.

Sindhu started the third set aggressively and raced to a 4-0 lead. Trailing 11-5, Sung cut the deficit to 13-10 but ultimately fell behind 20-14, thereby handing Sindhu six match points. Sindhu did not waste any opportunity and sealed the set 21-14 in 28 minutes and thereby the match 2-1.

In other semifinal of the Women’s Singles, top-seed Carolina Marin beat Japanese Akane Yamaguchi 21-16, 21-14 to reach the finals. The final between the two will be a repeat of the Rio Olympics final where Marin had prevailed over Sindhu to win the gold medal.

The final match of the Super Series between Sindhu and Marin will be played on 2nd April at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi.
