Vishal Bharadwaj’s most ambitious project, Rangoon, witnessed a slight growth in its box office collection on the second day. The film which earned 6.07 crore on its opening day, was followed by a collection of 7.5 Crore on Saturday. Despite having stellar performers like Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, the film witnessed a mediocre opening.
The movie which was made on a massive budget of 80 crores had been the centre of attention for a long time and was released amid a lot of buzz and curiosity, especially because of Vishal Bharadwaj’s exceptional record of his previous films. But until now, the movie has failed to make money, despite having Bharadwaj’s two personal favourites, Saif and Shahid. It seems like the fresh pair of Shahid-Kangana couldn’t pull the audience till the theatres. Even Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh seemed a bit surprised at the film’s first-day performance as he termed it as ‘dismal.’
“#Rangoon has a dismal start… Fri ₹ 6.07 cr. India biz… Will need to show massive growth on Sat + Sun to sustain and survive,” wrote Taran Adarsh on Twitter.
Known for his realistic storyline and setting, Bharadwaj’s Rangoon had hinted that there was a different story to tell, way different than what the audiences had witnessed till now. Rangoon is a love triangle set against the backdrop of World War II, and traces the story of Fierless Nadia, Bollywoods first original stunt woman still remembered for her fiery roles. Rusi Billimoria (Saif Ali Khan) sends his ladylove, Miss Julia (Kangana Ranaut) to the Indo-Burma border to entertain the troops. However, Julia looses her heart to soldier Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor). What follows next, forms the story.
Although the movie has been praised for its exemplary performances, the audience felt that the ending of the movie was too dramatic and the pace of the movie was quite slow. This could pose as a drawback for the movie but with songs like Bloody Hell and Tippa the film has also gained publicity. Whether Rangoon will be able to see an upswing is something to wait and watch out for.
