It’s official, people. The title for Vijay’s upcoming film up until now being called Vijay 61 and/or Thalapathy 61 has been titled Mersal. A certainly offbeat and rocking title indeed. And, along with the reveal of the film’s title, two character posters have also been unveiled featuring the ‘Ilayathalapathy’, who from now on will be called simply as ‘Thalapathy’.
Being directed by Atlee under the Thenandal Studios Limited banner, Mersal will see Vijay in triple roles for the first time also featuring a musical score by Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman. The film will see the Theri star playing the roles of a panchayat leader, a doctor and a magician. As of now, character posters for the village chief and the magician are out and are evoking a tremendous response across all social media forums.
Meanwhile, there is also quite a chatter among fans and those in the industry as to the inclusion of the title ‘Thalapathy’ rather than ‘Ilayathalapathy’ usually featured in all Vijay films’ up until now. This is certainly a step up and quite clearly the decision of the makers and director Atlee, who himself as well known to all by now is an ardent fan of the actor.
There is still a talk that the ‘Ilayathalapathy’ title could resurface when the third and final character’s poster is revealed. However, for now, with the new prefix title added, it looks clear that this is an extra treat for the actor’s fans, who have been calling him ‘Thalapathy’ for the past few years now.
Mersal has an ensemble star cast featuring Nithya Menen, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Kajal Aggarwal as the female leads along with SJ Suryah as the antagonist and, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Yogi Babu and Sathyan in supporting roles. The audio launch for the film is scheduled to take place in a grand manner in August followed by the worldwide theatrical release this Diwali in October.
