Digital Extremes, best known as the developers of free-to-play shooter Warframe, are opening a new studio. The company will be expanding to Toronto, opening a second development studio just a short distance from their London, Ontario headquarters.
Following the success of Warframe, Digital Extremes opened a new publishing services office in California in 2014. The Toronto studio is the company’s first new game development location.
“Toronto has become a hub of impressive game development over the past 7-8 years,” VP of publishing Meredith Braun tell GamesIndustry.biz. “Being only two hours down the road from our headquarters in London, expanding to Toronto is a logical choice to continue growth plans for Digital Extremes and keep up with the pace of our growing stable of games.”
Outside of Warframe, Digital Extremes’ modern development history has been spotty, with both Star Trek and Sword Coast Legends having released to mediocre responses. Yet the studio’s still on the verge of big things, with a major update for Warframe bringing open-world content to the game in the near future, and a new shooter called The Amazing Eternals on the horizon. (Incidentally, we’ve got quite a few beta keys to give away.
The Amazing Eternals sees the Warframe developers doubling down on what’s given them recent success, and we’re looking forward to seeing the results – as well as how they expand in the future.
