German luxury car manufacturer BMW is all set to launch its new generation 5 Series sedan class car in the Indian auto market on June 29, 2017. In fact, the company has already started production for the all-new BMW 5 Series at the company’s Chennai manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu. BMW is bringing its new 5 Series sedan in the form of Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) version, and then it is being assembled at the company’s Chennai plant. Ahead of its launch, the company’s dealerships across the country have already started taking bookings for the new luxury sedan against a down-payment of Rs 2 lakh.

“The all-new BMW 5 Series that will be launched this month has everything that is needed to take the Indian luxury car segment by storm. I would like to congratulate the Plant Chennai team for achieving this important milestone and we are extremely proud for the smooth start of production of the all-new BMW 5 Series,” said Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India.

For the Indian market, the BMW 5 Series will be offered in three engine variants– a 520d model with a 190hp, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, a 530d model with a 265hp, 3.0-litre, in-line 6 diesel engine and a 530i model with 252hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine. All the engines will be mated to 8-speed automatic gearbox.

First unveiled in the global market last year, the new 5 Series borrows its styling and features from its younger sibling, the BMW 7 series. Dimensionally, the new BMW 5 Series will measure 4,935mm (36mm longer) in length, 1,868mm (6mm wider) in width and 1,466mm (2mm higher) in height. However, the updated 5-Series is bigger than its predecessor and weighs roughly 100 kg lighter as the luxury sedan is made of BMW’s new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform.

The new-generation BMW 5 Series will feature electrically adjustable driver and passenger seats, multiple zone climate control, LED headlamps, remote parking function 600-watt Harmon Kardon sound system (optional), iDrive 6.0 infotainment system with gesture control and voice control and a host of safety features.

The BMW Chennai facility started its operations on March 29, 2007, and since then the automaker locally produces the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5. The Chennai manufacturing plant is able to deliver 11,000 units per year. Once launched the new BMW 5 Series sedan will compete against the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Jaguar XF, and the Volvo S90.
