The Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus is expected to launch its next flagship smartphone and successor to the OnePlus 3/ 3T from last year, which is rumoured to be called the OnePlus 5, in this summer. But now the company has exclusively confirmed to The Verge magazine that the OnePlus 5 will be unveiled in this summer. Earlier in this week, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that company’s next flagship smartphone is in works, but he didn’t mention the name for its upcoming smartphone.
So now the question is why OnePlus going straight to 5, apparently skipping OnePlus 4? Because the number four is considered unlucky in China, where OnePlus is based. However, the company said that the naming of its upcoming flagship didn’t factor, but was rather influenced by the number five jersey of former NBA player Robert Horry, who is liked person by a number of OnePlus employees, The Verge reported. There are reportedly two paintings of Robert Horry, who wore the number five jersey, hanging in the OnePlus’ Shenzhen office.
On Friday, the OnePlus 5 was found listed on a Chinese smartphone retail website called OppoMart, where price, some specifications and a June availability were outed. On Oppomart, the smartphone is listed at a retail price of $449 (roughly Rs 28,870) in the US, but it was not sure whether this was for the 64GB option or the 128GB option.
Based on the past rumours, the OnePlus 5 is expected to feature a 5.5-inch QHD display with a screen resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The device is also expected to be powered by a 2.45GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 quad-core processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and Adreno 540 GPU. It is also tipped to come with two onboard internal storage variants (64GB/128GB). There is also a possibility that the OnePlus 5 may come in two variants, one with 6GB RAM of 128 GB ROM and another with 8GB RAM of 256 GB ROM. On the software front, the 4G smartphone is expected to run on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box with OxygenOS running on top. According to recent rumours, the OnePlus 5 is expected to sport a 12-megapixel dual rear camera setup (standard RGB + monochrome). On the front, it has an 8-megapixel shooter for selfies. But past rumours have suggested that the OnePlus 5 will sport a 23-megapixel rear camera.
