The Indian arm of the British premium automobile manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on Sunday announced the launch of its new-generation seven-seater premium SUV, christened as the “Land Rover Discovery” in the Indian auto market at a starting price of Rs. 71.38 lakh (Ex-showroom, Pan India). If you don’t remember, the bookings for the new Land Rover Discovery began a couple of months ago against a token amount ranging between Rs 2-5 lakh (depends on dealers), while the deliveries of the new Discovery to its owners will commence from November 2017. To pre-book the all-new seven-seater Discovery, prospective customers will have to visit at the company’s official online website www.findmeasuv.in or any of the 25 Land Rover-authorised dealerships across the country.
To recall, the seven-seater luxury SUV was first showcased at the 2014 New York Auto Show as the Discovery Vision Concept and made its global debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery has been offered by the company in five variants – S, SE, HSE, HSE Luxury and First Edition and will be available in both petrol and diesel powertrain options.

Engine:
Talking about its power and performance, the new generation Discovery will be offered in two powertrain options — one petrol variant and one diesel variant. The petrol variant Land Rover Discovery is powered by a 3.0-litre, Si6 V6 turbo-petrol engine that churns out 335 bhp of peak power against the peak torque of 450 Nm @ 3,500-5,000 rpm. On the other hand, the diesel variant Land Rover Discovery is powered by a 3.0 L Td6 V6 turbo-diesel engine that generates 255 bhp of peak power @ 3,750 rpm and the peak torque of 600 Nm @ 2000 rpm. Both the engines come mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The petrol-powered Land Rover Discovery needs only 7.1 seconds to reach 0-100kmph from engine start and has an electronically restricted top speed of 215km per hour. On the other hand, the diesel-powered Land Rover Discovery needs 8.1 seconds to reach 0-100kmph from engine start and has an electronically restricted top speed of 209km per hour.
Exterior:
Talking about its exterior, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery borrows its styling and design languages from the new generation Evoque, Range Rover and Discovery Sport SUVs. The new-generation Discovery is 480kg lighter than the previous model as the new Discovery is made of an aluminium monocoque chassis and based on the company’s latest lightweight full-size SUV architecture. The front part of the gets Adaptive LED headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and company’s signature twin-slat grille. The front bumper sports a lower placed wide air dam and vertical air intakes. The rear section of the SUV receives an integrated spoiler with LED taillights and a muscular black plastic cladding on the rear bumper. Apart from this, the car also gets features like 21-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels, electrically retractable and heated ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors), electric sunroof and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Dimensionally, the new Land Rover Discovery measures 4,988 mm in length, 2,220 mm in width and 1,846 mm in height. The car has a wheelbase of 2,922 mm.
Interior:
Being a luxury SUV member, the new Land Rover Discovery SUV sports various exciting features inside the cabin such as 16-way electrically adjustable front seats, lane-keeping assist, company’s 10-inch touchscreen InControl Touch Pro infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 14-speaker 825-watt Meridian digital surround system (depending on the variant), three-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, twin front cup holders, dual panoramic sunroofs, heads-up information display for the driver and much more. Apart from this, the vehicle also gets a 360-degree camera as standard, four 12V charging points, and Intelligent Seat Fold technology that allows passengers to reconfigure the second- and the third-row seats.
Safety:
In terms of safety, the new-generation Land Rover Discovery SUV offers various safety features including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), Front side impact airbags, Side curtain airbags, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Hill Start Assist, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Corner Braking Control (CBC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), Parallel-Park Assist and Traction control and much more.
In the Indian market, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery will compete against the likes of Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.
