2017 Renault Captur premium crossover SUV launched in India; Prices start at Rs. 9.99 lakh (Ex-showroom)

The Indian arm of the French automobile manufacturer Renault India on Monday announced the launch of its much-awaited premium crossover SUV, christened as the “Renault Captur” in the Indian four-wheeler market at a starting price of Rs. 9.99 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). If you don’t remember, the bookings for the 2017 Renault Captur compact SUV began in September this year at a down-payment of Rs. 25,000. Bookings for the Captur are already open at Renault authorised dealerships across the country at an advance amount of Rs 25,000. Prospective customers can also make bookings for the new Renault crossover using the new Captur app from Renault, while the deliveries of the new Captur to its owners will commence from today in five body colour options including Moonlight Silver, Planet Grey, Cayenne Orange, Pearl White, and Mahogany Brown. Based on the same M0 platform, the Renault Captur is the company’s fourth utility vehicle after the Duster, Lodgy, and Koleos, which is now discontinued by the French car maker.

The new Renault Captur premium crossover SUV has been offered by the company in three trims– RXE, RXL, and RXT and will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. Interestingly, the Captur diesel will also get an extra top-spec “Platine” variant. Renault has launched the Captur compact SUV at an introductory price of Rs 9.99 lakh for the base RXE petrol, while the Diesel engine-powered Captur comes at a price range of Rs. 11.39 lakh – Rs. 13.88 lakh. These are all introductory prices and the prices will be revised or increased in few months.

Engine & Power:

Talking about its mechanical department, the Renault Captur comes in two engine options —a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder, 16 valves, H4K petrol engine and a 1.5-litre K9k Turbocharged diesel engine. The petrol engine generates 106 bhp of peak power at 5,600 rpm and 142Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre K9k Turbocharged diesel engine produces 110 bhp of peak power at 4,000 rpm and 240Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. Both the engine units come mated to a manual transmission only, and while the petrol version gets a 5-speed manual gearbox, the diesel engine model comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The petrol engine-powered compact SUV delivers a fuel efficiency of 13.87 kmpl, while the diesel engine-powered Captur returns a mileage of 20.37 kmpl.

Exterior Design:

As we mentioned above, the new Renault Captur is based on the M0 platform and shares its underpinnings with the company’s Duster SUV. This premium crossover sports a tenacious body character, aggressive design, swooping lines and curves, giving it a stylish outlook and strong personality. The Euro-spec Renault Captur is totally different from the India-spec Captur, as the Europe-based model is underpinned by the advanced Renault Clio platform. However, the India-spec Renault Captur is now longer than the European model. Dimensionally, the all-new Renault Captur measures 4329 mm in length, 1,813 mm in width, 1,619 mm in height. The car has a wheelbase of 2,673 mm and offers a 210 mm of ground clearance. To offer passengers more comfortable journey, Renault has also provided a boot space of 392-litre and can be further extended to 1,352-litre by folding the rear seats. The car rides on 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels (on top trims) and has a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres.

The front part of the Renault Captur crossover gets full-LED headlights, called the “Pure Vision LED” with integrated LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and dynamic LED turn indicators. The front-end of the vehicle is characterized by a wide V-shaped grille that is flanked by a pair of sleek LED headlamps on the sides. At the middle portion of the grille is a large Renault badge and a chrome top strip that connects the full-LED headlamps. The C-shaped LED DRLs in the lower part of the bumper enhances the sleek design of the vehicle and its blacked-out C-pillar provides a sporty side profile. Apart from this, the car also gets features like flared wheel arches, roof rails, and 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

At the rear, the Renault Captur features premium-looking LED taillights with a C-shaped light pattern and a chrome strip above the registration plate. The rear bumper features a grey skid plate that also houses the exhaust pipe. Apart from these specs, the Captur also comes with a lot of personalisation options and 7 exclusive fashion-inspired dual-tone paint schemes in the form of accessories and body graphics for enhancing the visual appeal. The personalisation options include 16 different roof decal designs, ORVM covers and body graphics. On the other side, the dual-tone colour scheme is available in RXT and Platine variants at an additional amount of Rs. 17,000.

Interior Design:

Talking about its interior, the new Renault Captur gets a stylish, modern and quality of materials that offers a premium feel. The cabin is finished in a dual-tone black and white theme. Top-spec models also get gold and white inserts. The car also gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Bluetooth connectivity, Voice-recognition feature (only for iOS), Push-to-talk function and GPS navigation. Unfortunately, the infotainment system doesn’t support the latest features like Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Apart from this, the premium crossover SUV also gets leather upholstery, white and black leatherette seats, electrically adjustable driver seat, a semi-digital instrument cluster (it sports a twin-pod design along with a digital speedo), 6-speaker Arkamys sound system, ambient LED lighting, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, cruise control, electrically operated wing mirrors, steering mounted audio controls, rain sensing wipers and automatic headlamps.

Safety Features:

In terms of safety, the new new Renault Captur premium crossover SUV features dual airbags as standard (top-spec Platine gets 4 airbags), ABS (Anti-lock braking system), EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Start Assist, Brake Assist, Anti-theft alarm, ISOFIX as standard — a child seat restraint system as standard, indicators on ORVM and much more.

In the Indian lucrative market, the Renault Captur compact SUV will compete against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass, Mahindra XUV500, Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, and Tata Hexa.
