Australian Open 2017 has just witnessed the most shocking elimination. Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin eliminated Novak Djokovic, the defending Australian Open champion and 6 time Australian open winner in a major upset. The match itself was a thrilling five set affair.
Istomin won a hard fought first set. The first set went to tiebreaker. Djokovic and Istomin each won three games each in the first set. Istomin won the tiebreaker 10-8.
Djokovic fought back and won the next two sets. The second set too was very close but Djokovic prevailed winning the set 7-5. The third set showed why Djokovic is one of the best players today. Djokovic dominated Istomin winning the set 6-2.
The fourth set went similar to the first set ending again in a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker ended with Istomin winning the set 7-5.
Djokovic and Istomin were tied at two sets each going into the final set.
In the final set, Istomin finished the game with a fairy tale ending. He captured the set 6-4 to cement his victory over the world number 2. This is the first time Djokovic has not made it to round three since Wimbledon 2008.
Elsewhere, Milos Raonic in his match survived a fight back in the third set to stay in the tournament. Raonic defeated Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(7-4). Also, David Ferrer took four sets to defeat his opponent. Ferrer dropped the first set to Escobedo. Ferrer regrouped and defeated Escobedo 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Lastly, Frenchmen Richard Gasquet had an easy outing. He won his match defeating Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
In the Women’s singles today. 6 time Australian open champion Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki were in action. Serena Williams defeated Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-4 to stay in the mix. Danish star Caroline Wozniacki also won her match. Wozniacki defeated Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-3.
Lastly, In Women’s doubles. Sania Mirza’s former partner was in action. Martina Hingis and her new partner Coco Vandeweghe defeated Jankovic and Wickmayer 6-3, 6-4.
With the Elimination of Djokovic the Australian Open will have a new champion.
