Alastair Cook has stepped down as England’s captain with immediate effect,ECB told media(on February 6).
Test cricket is such a tough cricket in itself and when you are the captain of the team, it is hard. Not that players don’t cherish it but the job is definitely a draining one .
Alastair cook was certainly a special captain. He won 2 Ashes series, a test tour in India and South Africa which combine together to show the greatness of a team and the captain himself.
Coming to the end of India tour, it felt as if cook was nearing end and I feel that he has got his timing spot on. Now that he is without the additional burden of the captaincy he can certainly relax and gain his form back . If he does that, he can even surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 test runs .
Alastair Cook gave his reasons for stepping down as England Test captain, admitting it was “an incredibly tough decision to make” after 59 Tests in charge. “I’ve loved every minute as England captain,” Cook told Sky Sports from Lord’s. “But it’s a job you have to commit 100% to, and there’ve been certain times throughout my four or five years in the job when I’ve been to the well and dug pretty deep.
“And coming back from India, the way I felt then, I didn’t think I had it in me to do it again, because this isn’t a job where you can operate at 95%. When I looked in that mirror, I felt it was time. I’ve been leading some great men and had some great moments as England captain, but I do think it’s the right time for me and for the team.”
It is the right time for Joe Root to take the charge of English team and instill some more aggressive approach and take the team only further from what it is now.
