What a glorious day for young Indian hockey players! Led by Harjeet Singh the team clinched the title of Junior Hockey World Cup for themselves at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, Lucknow. The Belgian team proved to be a worthy opponent indeed.
The first half was dominated by the Indian team, closing at half time with a score of 2-0. Mid fielder Harjeet Singh-led the team forward with an attacking intent and helped Gurjant to strike at the 9th minute. The strike seemed almost impossible, but the brilliant forward Gurjant improvised to score for India. The shot that was taken from a zero angle landed straight at the right hand top corner of the goal.
The lead taken by the Indians was doubled when Simranjeet Singh, another forward, dared to one up the Belgian team. This shot was however taken from the edge of the box, tricking Van Doren and sliding right underneath him to hit the goal. India’s luck in the second half was better than none, as they failed to aid from two penalty corners. Belgium tried to match the scores but only could get one goal at the very end of this spectacular match.
Harjeet’s men become the second team to have lifted the prestigious title. The first being Gagan Ajit Singh’s colts in 2001. History repeats and after 15 years of struggle, the trophy is brought home.
