She is an Indian American author who hails from West Bengal and her stories deal with immigrants from India. Lahiri’s novel ‘The Namesake’ was included in the New York Magazine Book of the Year. Also her novel ‘Interpreter Of Maladies’ received the 2000 Pulitzer Prize.

4. Sunita Williams

She is an Indian American astronaut who has set a record for longest space flight by a woman. She also has the record of a number of spacewalks for a woman.

5. Bachendri Pal

She holds the record of the Guinness Book for being the first Indian women to summit the Mt. Everest. She was the first woman to graduate from her village in Garhwal.

6. Kiran Bedi

The first woman IPS officer of India. She was at the position of Director General at the Bureau of Police Research and Development but took voluntary retirement and founded two NGO’s namely the Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation for welfare and preventative policing in 1988 and the India Vision Foundation for prison reformation, drug abuse prevention and child welfare in 1994.

7. Mary Kom

Mary Kom became the first Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics and winning the bronze medal. Not only that, she is a five-time World Boxing champion, and who has won a medal in each one of the six world championships.

8. P T Usha

She became the first Indian women to reach the final of an Olympic event after winning her 400m hurdles in the semi-final. She has also won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the track events.

9. Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun who left her home at the age of 18 and joined an Irish group ‘Sisters of Loreto’. She looked after the sick, poor, orphaned people for almost 45 years and was awarded Nobel Peace Award.

10. Kalpana Chawla

The idol of millions of girls and the first Indian woman in space. She died in the space shuttle Columbia disaster but encouraged many young women to pursue their dreams.
