After launching the entry-level M5c smartphone in China in May this year, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu on Monday introduced a new budget-oriented “A-series” range of smartphones with the launch of Meizu A5 in the company’s homeland, China. Priced at CNY 699 (approximately Rs. 6,700), the first member of the Meizu “A-series” is currently now available for purchase in China via company’s official online store in Black, Gold and Silver colour options. Unfortunately, the company has made no official announcements about the pricing details and availability of the Meizu A5 budget smartphone for other markets.
In terms of design, the Meizu A5 sports a sleek metal unibody design with polycarbonate material and metal edges all around, giving it an impressive look. The volume rockers as well as the power/lock buttons are all housed on the right-hand edge of the device while the SIM card tray is situated at the left-hand edge of the device. The Meizu A5 also features an mBack multifunctional button which is placed just below the display panel. The speaker grilles are seen at the bottom edge of the handset along with a microUSB 2.0 port sitting in the middle. And a 3.5mm audio socket is placed on the very top edge of the device. The rear panel houses an 8MP main camera, LED flash module and company’s logo, while the top front panel features a 5MP selfie camera, sensors, and an earpiece.
Technically speaking, the Meizu A5 comes equipped with a 5-inch HD IPS display with a screen resolution of 720×1280 pixels and has a pixel density of 294 ppi. The smartphone is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6737 Quad-Core processor, coupled with Mali T720 GPU to handle the graphics. The device is backed up by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 128GB via micro SD card slot. On the software front, Meizu A5 runs company’s own Flyme OS custom UI skin based on Google’s unspecified Android version (probably Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS).
In terms of photography, Meizu A5 sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, 4-element lens, and LED flash. On the front, there is a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter with an f/2.2 aperture for capturing selfies and making video calls. The front camera supports ArcSoft beautification algorithm.
Connectivity options on the smartphone include dual-SIM (hybrid slot), 4G voLTE, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS/A-GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack and a microUSB 2.0 port for charging and data transfer. Sensors on the device include a Gravity sensor, Proximity sensor, E-Compass, IR sensor, and Ambient light sensor. The Meizu A5 is fuelled by a decent 3060mAh battery. Dimension wise, the handset measures 144.0 x 70.5 x 8.3 mm and weighs around 140 grams.
