Japanese smartphone-maker Sony announced a number of new smartphones at this year’s World Mobile Congress (WMC 2017) event in Barcelona, including two flagship models, Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs along with two mid-range smartphones namely Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra. Just within a month of the announcement, Sony on Monday has officially launched its latest smartphone Xperia XZs in India at a price tag of Rs 49,990. The launch event was held in New Delhi. The new Sony Xperia XZs is the successor to last year’s Xperia XZ and XZs comes with Sony’s premium loop design and uses an entirely new form of aluminium, called ALKALEIDO metal.
The new Sony Xperia XZs smartphone will be available on e-commerce portal Flipkart, as well as all Sony Center and offline select retail outlets from April 11. You can also pre-order for the device starting today and the pre-booking will be open between April 4 and April 10. Those who pre-order the smartphone, they will also get Sony’s SRS-XB10 wireless Bluetooth speaker which is worth Rs 4,990. The premium Android smartphone will be retailed in Ice Blue, Black and Warm Silver color variants.

The main highlight of the smartphone is it’s 19-megapixel rear camera with Sony’s new “Motion Eye” camera system that provides 5x faster image scanning and data transfer. “Motion Eye” camera is capable of shooting videos at 960 frames per second in 720p resolution, providing Super slow motion video playback that is apparently four times slower than other smartphones. Sony says the super-slow motion videos is possible because of the new memory stacked 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS CMOS sensor and BIONZ processing engine.

In terms of specifications, the Sony Xperia XZs features a 5.2-inch (1080×1920 pixels) Triluminos IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 424 ppi and the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The phone supports Sony’s trademark X-Reality engine for mobile. The Xperia XZs is powered by a 2.15GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor paired with Adreno 510 GPU. The Sony Xperia XZs is backed by 4GB of RAM and comes in two internal memory storage variants namely 32GB and 64 GB, that are further expandable by up to 256GB via a dedicated micro-SD card slot. Sony Xperia XZs runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box (upgradable to Android 7.1 Nougat) and Sony’s own custom UI over the top skin. It also features an IP65/68 rating for dust and water resistance.
In terms of optics, the phone sports a 19-megapixel Motion Eye camera with 1/ 2.3-inch Exmor RS (for mobile) memory stacked image sensor and Sony’s 25mm wide G lens. Its rear camera comes with Ant-distortion shutter, Triple image sensing technology, predictive phase detection and laser autofocus, SteadyShot with Intelligent Active Mode (5-axis stabilization), Pixel Pitch 1.22μm, 0.5 sec Quick Launch & Capture, HDR mode, 5x zoom, 4K video recording and ultra-slow motion video recording with 960fps. Talking about front facing camera, the Xperia XZs comes with a 13-megapixel camera with wide-angle field of view having 1/3.06-inch Exmor RS for mobile image sensor, 22mm wide angle lens, ISO6400 and f/2.0 aperture.

In terms of Connectivity, the Sony Xperia XZs supports dual SIM, dual standby using the (nano-SIM + nano-SIM/microSD) slot. Connectivity options include 4G LTE with VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Miracast, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS with GLONASS, DLNA, NFC, Google Cast, 3.5mm audio jack and USB 3.1 Type-C port. The sensors on the device include ambient light sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, gyroscope and magnetometer.
The Xperia XZs is fuelled by a 2,900mAh non-removable battery and supports Qnovo’s adaptive charging and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0. It ships with a Quick Charger UCH-12 in the box which is claimed to charge the phone by up to 60 per cent in 45 minutes. The device measures 146 x 72 x 8.1 mm and weighs 161 grams.
