Liverpool faced Plymouth in the second leg of FA cup Round 3. The first leg at Anfield ended in a draw. The Reds travelled to home park to face a gritty Plymouth.
Liverpool then travelled 300 miles to face the Pilgrims at their home ground. Excited fans packed the stadium in hopes of another exciting match.
Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva scored his first goal in 7 years.
The Pilgrims suffered a early setback as Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva scored with a beautiful header in the 18th minute. The goal put Liverpool ahead 1-0. Lucas headed the ball into the net from an excellent corner kick by Philippe Countinho. This was Leiva’s first goal in 7 years!
The ball from Countinho dropped close to the near post. Leiva rushed and headed it right past Plymouth’s goalkeeper McCormick. Plymouth also had plenty of good chance in the first half including two free kicks and a few shots at the goal. The shots were dangerous and Plymouth should have cancelled Leiva’s goal. Plymouth played aggressively troubling the Liverpool players.
Plymouth continued their aggressive play attacking the Liverpool repeatedly but failed to get the ball into the net. The closest Plymouth very close to levelling but the acrobatic scissors kick by Jake Jervis hits the the post. Liverpool tried to stall Plymouth’s momentum and create their own chances. Plymouth nearly gifted Liverpool a goal when McCormick’s clearance lands the ball at 19 year old Harry Wilson’s shins but thankfully for Plymouth the ball doesn’t end up in the goal.Liverpool again had a chance when an unnecessary challenge by Plymouth defender Yann Songo’o’s gives liverpool a penalty in the 86th minute.But the penalty by Divock Origi gets easily blocked by McCormick.
The Young Liverpool team managed to hold off a gritty and determined Plymouth. The Pilgrims troubled Jurgen Kloop’s men with their aggressive play but did not manage to find the back of the net. Thus, Liverpool enters the 4th round of FA cup on the back of Leiva’s first goal in 7 years.
