Volcano at Italy

A grocampi2up of scientists, led by Giovanni Chiodini of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics, Rome, submitted a report on the possibility of a volcanic eruption in Italy.

The report says, “We use the results of physical and volatile saturation models to demonstrate that magnetic volatile released by decompressed magmas at Critical Degassing Pressure (CDP) can drive volcanic unrest towards a critical state”.

In the report submitted Nature Communications, it is mentioned that the magma could be approaching the CDP at Campi Flegrei.

Campi Flegrei – The burning field

Campi Flegrei caldera was formed due to the eruption of Archiflegreo volcano. This lead to the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption. It has around 24 craters and volcanic edifices. volcano1
This is located to the west of Naples, Italy. The city of Naples is home to around 500,000 inhabitants. Thus, making it a very populous city.
The Campi Flegrei, due to its history, it is more prone to face the magma-hydrothermal interaction. The scientists fear that the city of Naples is more vulnerable to the burning magma.
The first eruption also known as the First Phlegraean period, occurred about 37,000 years ago. This created the Campi Flegrei.
The Second Phlegraean period took place about 12,000 years ago. Due to this, there was a formation of the Neapolitan Yellow tuff. This refers the yellow rocks.
Following this the third major one occurred between 8000-5000 years ago. This is characterized by white pozzolana.

In regard of this, the Government of Italy has raised the alert from green to yellow. This means that the site requires scientific monitoring. Although the place has seen timely volcanic eruptions, the scientists of the Instituto Nazional di Geofisica e Vulcanoligia fear a super volcanic eruption. They are researching furthermore on the possible period of occurrence which at present is not known.
