In September, internet giant, Yahoo had disclosed that there had been a breach in security in 2014 and 500 million accounts had been hacked. Now, in a shocking statement, Yahoo disclosed that almost one billion accounts had been affected in a hacking attack in 2013.
According to Yahoo, exceptfor bank and payment data, names, phone numbers, passwords and email addresses were stolen. This hack was discovered during the continuing investigations of the 2014 breach by authorities and security experts .
Yahoo believes, “An unauthorised third party in August 2013, stole the data associated with more than one billion user accounts.’ Account holders are urged to change their passwords and security questions.
While it raises serious questions of security breach in the digital world, Yahoo unlike the last time hasn’t attributed the attack to any state-sponsored activity as of yet.
Yahoo has come under pressure as to why it took so long to disclose the breach. The company is soon going to be taken over by Verizon. This disclosure raises questions about the $4.8 billion offer by Verizon, a US mobile carrier.
Verizon clarified in a statement that it will evaluate the situation and review the new development before reaching any final conclusions.
This is a huge embarrassment for Yahoo as it was once one of the top names in internet business. After the dot-com boom, it had started loosing its ground to upcoming giants like Facebook and Google.
