Pregnancy has always been one of those stages that caused huge impact both on the mother and the babies. This has been one of the reasons for why pregnant women are always advised to think, do, read, watch and listen to positive and happy things.
There have been several attributes that are said to be creating an impact on the foetus. Indeed, every gynaecologist might offer unique advice. But a recent study by researchers at the Concordia University in Canada, has thrown light on few other new facts.
Their study reveals that the position of the baby in the womb and the nutrition supply can directly impact the mental or brain health of the child during their teenage. For the research, the researchers keenly observed various pairs of genetically identical twins from their birth to teenage; in fact, even since they were inside their mother’s womb. Their birth weights were determined and it was a wonder how the twins didn’t weigh the same.
Since these babies share the same womb, they tend to share certain in-uterus environmental conditions like gestation age, mother’s lifestyle, etc. But this difference in birth weights occurred due to better placement of child than the other. Booji is one of the members of this research team. “For instance, one foetus might have a better placement in the womb or better access to nutrition,” said Booij, pointing out to the possible reason for the difference.
The research also showed that these in-uterus factors may affect the cortex, that is a region of the brain dealing with regulating emotions and cognitive abilities. By the time the twins reach adolescence, their brain volumes in the cortex vary drastically resulting in variations in cognitive abilities.
This study that has been published in the Human Brain Mapping journal has provided a keen insight into the medical intricacies of giving birth to genetically identical twins.
